Smoant Charon Baby Review

Chinese manufacturer Smoant seems to be on a quest to create miniature pod versions of all its most iconic vape mods. After the Battlestar Baby, they’ve now come up with a miniature Charon mod called (you guessed it!) the Charon Baby. It’s essentially a repackaged Battlestar Baby, but that’s not very surprising, considering the advanced mods that inspired these pod systems were very similar as well. Anyways, here’s what I think about the Smoant Charon Baby vape pod:

A Look at the Contents

The new Charon Baby comes in a very similar package to that of the Battlestar Baby – a small cardboard box with a picture of the device (in the color it comes in) on the front, and a list of contents, manufacturer contact information and some warnings, on the back.

Inside the packaging we have the Charon Baby pod system, and a box of accessories which includes a user manual, a USB Type-C charging cable, and an extra coil-head (one comes pre-installed in the refillable pod). It’s pretty much the exact same kit as the Battlestar Baby, including the ingenious USB Type-C cable that doubles as a measuring tape and lanyard.

Design and Build Quality

From the original Charon TC218 to the more advanced Charon TS218 and Charon Mini, Smoant Charon vape mods have always been fairly complex, so there was no way for the manufacturer to include their original designs and features into a much smaller, rudimentary package. So the Charon Baby doesn’t really look like a Charon mod, just like the Battlestar Baby wasn’t a perfect replica of the Smoant Battlestar mod, but it does have some elements that hint at the device that inspired it.

The Charon Baby pod system measures 73mm x 44mm x 19mm, which makes it even smaller than the Battlestar Baby, and only slightly thicker. It’s made of the same zinc alloy as Smoant’s other pod system, and features the same CPR decorative panels that not only look stunning, but prevent fingerprint marks as well.

On the bottom of the Smoant Charon Baby, we have a Type-C charging port. I love that they upgraded to Type-C, but I hate it when manufacturers put the charging port on the bottom, as that means I always have to set my mod on its side to charge, and that increases the risk of scratching, especially with such glossy decorative panels.

Other mentionable details about the Charon Baby include the lanyard holder, and the LED battery indicator near the bottom. Other than that, the mod is a compact, one piece device.

The removable pods are the same as the one used on the Battlestar Baby, so I won’t go into too much detail about them. They are slightly tinted, hold up to 2ml of e-liquid, and feature the same replaceable PnP (plug ‘n Play) coil-heads as the Battlestar Baby. The pods are interchangeable and so are the coil-heads, so if you happen to own one of these pod systems, you can use both the pods and the coil-heads with the other. To refill the pods, just pop open the fill port on the side (covered with a rubber plug), fill it up, and let it sit for a few minutes.

The Smoant Charon has essentially the same build quality as the Battlestar Baby, so if you liked that one, you’re probably going to like this one as well.

Battery Life and Performance

Not a lot to go over in this section, as looking at the specs sheet of both the Battlestar Charon Baby and Battlestar Baby, the two devices are identical. They both have a respectable battery capacity of 750mAh, max power output of 15W, and are powered by the same version of Smoant’s proprietary Ant chip. The charging rate is the same as well (0.8A), as is the full charging time (about an hour).

Both devices can be used in passthrough mode, so if you want to vape while they are charging, you can do so.

Performance-wise, again, there is no separating the Charon Baby from its twin, the Battlestar Baby. They both have the same power output, use the exact same pods and coil-heads, so the performance is identical. You get a rewarding, if somewhat loose mouth-to-lung (MTL) vape with the 1.2Ω Ni80 coil-head, and a restrictive direct lung hit, as well as considerably more vapor with the 0.6Ω mesh coil-head. Both coil-heads produce decent flavor, nothing too impressive, but definitely ok for this type of product.

For a draw-activated pod system, the Smoant Charon Baby activates the battery very fast, and the power ramp-up time is super-fast as well. It’s not the most advanced pod system on the market, not by a long-shot, but it’s not designed to be, and the few things it’s supposed to do it does very well.

Conclusion

The Smoant Charon Baby is essentially a repackaged version of the Chinese company’s Battlestar Baby pod system. They have the same technical specifications, use the same pods and coil-heads, so it’s not shocker that they perform virtually the same. If you already own one of them and you’re not into collecting pod systems, I would pass on the other, but if you’re in the market for a compact, lightweight pod system with a simple-to-use automatic switch, the Charon Baby is a pretty nice device.

Що можна відзначити за першим враженням? Гаджет Charon Baby Plus мало чим відрізняється від свого попередника зовні. У нього схожий дизайн та форма корпусу, що виготовляється із сталевого сплаву. Закруглені кути додають зручності та ергономіки при використанні.

Що стосується розмірів, то новий пристрій дещо більший за свою початкову версію. Виробник пропонує три основні забарвлення девайсу, але оригінальність повинні надавати змінні барвисті накладки, які мають різні візерунки та тематики сюжету та продаються окремо.
